Fabregas leads Spain comeback

The new golden boy of Spanish football, Cesc Fabregas, scored twice as Spain came back from two goals down to beat Chile 3-2.

Fabregas came off the bench to score the levelling and winning goals in a dramatic second half comeback in which another substitute from Barcelona, Andres Iniesta, scored the first.

Despite the game being a friendly it ended in a very heated affair with players from both teams and benches ending up in a mass brawl on the pitch.

Chile had initially stunned the Spaniards with a brilliant goal inside ten minutes after Mauricio Isla struck a superb shot into the far post. Spain then fell further behind by 20 minutes as La Furia Roja were punished by another quality finish, this time from from Eduardo Vargas, who rounded Iker Casillas after Spain had lost possession in midfield.

Shortly after coming on as a second half substitute for Xabi Alonso, Andres Iniesta drilled home for La Roja, halving the deficit. Cesc Fabregas then poked home the equaliser on 71 minutes after a lovely through-ball from Iniesta. Pablo Contreras was sent off for Chile in the dying minutes as the game started to boil over rather untimely on Fifa’s ‘Fair Play Day’.

Spain were then rather softly awarded an injury time penalty, leading to further Chilean anger. Cesc Fabregas hit a decent penalty, met with an equally decent save on to the post, only for Fabregas to volley home on the rebound to complete an amazing Spanish comeback.

With two minutes of injury time left to play, Chile let their frustrations boil over. The mass brawl involved the majority of the on field players and many from the bench, but was well defused by the referee who chose to blow the final whistle rather than try to impossibly identify the numerous culprits of which he could have sent off.
