Bale Marca Madrid

Bale Going, Staying, Gone!

Bale Marca MadridDepending which paper you read in Spain this morning Gareth Bale is either staying at Spurs or has already agreed his deal with Real Madrid. If you read them all however, you may be left slightly confused.

While Mundo Deportivo run a story saying Ancelotti doesn’t see it necessary to sign Bale and suggests Madrid need no more players, Marca have it all over their front page that a deal for Bale has been agreed. Not only that but the player has told Tottenham that he wants to leave and is set to sign a 10 million euro per year package with the Spanish Giants.

Marca also say that Ancelotti won’t be finished there and that Luis Suarez will be joining him at Madrid. Wow, what a dive fest that will be if Suarez, Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo all end up playing together. -Marca also report (again) that Ronaldo will end his career at Madrid and will sign a new contract in the coming days for 15 million euros per year!

Marca’s other stories today are that Spurs are set to sign Roberto Soldado and that Valencia will look to sign one of Leandro Damiao, Fred or Manchester United’s Chicharito as a replacement.

Pichichi 100 year anniversary

Pichichi: 100 Years On

Today is the 100th anniversary of the day Pichichi scored his first goal.

Pichichi 100 year anniversaryPichichi‘ whose real name was Rafael Moreno Aranzadi, was the stuff of legend, scoring 200 league goals in 170 appearances over a 10 year career with Athletic Bilbao. His name went on to become one of legend, that which we refer to the player who has scored the most goals in a season in Spain, but not before the man himself had his life cut incredibly short.

Pichichi was labelled a mischievous and unruly troublemaker by his uncle, a local priest, and it was these traits that led to his early death at just 29 years of age. Officially his death was put down to contracting typhus as a result of eating some bad oysters but his family later admitted that he died as a result of his ‘living life on the edge’.

17th March 1913 was the day of Rafael Moreno Aranzadi Pichichi’s debut for his boyhood club Athletic Bilbao: A Copa del Rey semi final. It took him just 2 minutes to register his first Bilbao goal, the first of 77 in 89 Copa del Rey matches.

In 1953 Spanish newspaper Marca decided to set up the award for the season’s top scorer, and named it after the prolific forward from Bilbao.

100 years on and it is Lionel Messi who is odds on to take the Pichichi trophy for 2012-2013 for the third time in four seasons (the other one going to Cristiano Ronaldo).

Falcao 5 goal Pichichi

Falcao bags 5 in Pichichi race

Falcao 5 goal PichichiRadamel Falcao tonight scored 5 goals in Atletico Madrid’s 6-0 drubbing of Deportivo La Coruna! A first half brace followed up by an 8 minute second half hattrick saw Falcao jump from 11 goals to 16, leap-frogging Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo in to second place in the race for the Pichichi 2012-2013. It’s the first time one player has scored 5 in La Liga for 10 years.

He remains 5 goals behind Lionel Messi who will play later this evening in Barcelona’s away game at Real Betis down in Andalusia. Messi himself is looking to break Gerd Muller’s record tally of 85 goals in a calendar year and just needs two to do just that. A few days ago it seemed like Messi may fall short of the record and lose ground in the Pichichi battle as he seemed to suffer a bad injury in the Champions League. However, the man, or perhaps machine, has recovered to come back instantly.

How Aston Villa fans have been made to suffer from afar since their club decided against spending £7m on Falcao in 2009 as they opted for Emile Heskey instead. Falcao is now widely regarded as the best out and out striker in world football and is Breaking the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly in La Liga’s Pichichi race.

Top 15 World Footballers by Market Value

Top 15 Footballers by Market Value

Rooney-Aguero-Falcao-Transfer-ValueAs the January transfer window approaches, AS look at who is worth the most in the transfer market and discover that there are 15 players in the world that are valued at more than €40m.

The Madrid-based paper have highlighted the fact that 9 of the top 15 play in the Spanish La Liga. Just three players from the Premiership make the top 15: Rooney in 4th position is valued at €60.2m; Aguero is 7th (€53.7); and Hazard is 11th (€43.7).

Valued at €140m Lionel Messi tops the list compiled by Brazilian consultants, Pluriconsultoria , and the rest of the top 15 is as follows:

Top 15 World Footballers by Market Value

Messi – €140m
Ronaldo – €96.3m
Iniesta – €68.4m
Rooney – €60.2m
Falcao – €56.1m
Neymar – €55m
Aguero – €53.7m
Fabregas – €51m
Silva – €51m
Ozil – €44m
Hazard – €43.7m
Di Maria – €43.6m
Benzema – €42.5m
Thiago Silva – €40.5m
Buquets – €40m

So that’s four from Barcelona, 4 from Real Madrid, 1 from Atletico Madrid and one each from Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Pluriconsultoria analyse 16 factors to come to their conclusions including age, technical quality, finishing ability (passes as well as shots), force, position, level of championship, titles and international appearances. All sounds a bit championship manager really. Of the above you’d thik only Falcao and possibly Neymar would move in January, and if they do I wonder how close it would be to the value given above. Sadly for Spurs fans Gareth Bale doesn’t make the top 15 so according to this publication could be off for less than €40m. Doubtful though isn’t it.

Messi scores against Athletic Bilbao

A Mess in the Pichichi Standings

Messi scores against Athletic Bilbao

After this weekend of matches there is now a mess with the Pichichi classification and it’s not the first time it’s happened.

After his 2 goals at the weekend in Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Athletic Bilbao, Leo Messi extended his lead at the top of this year’s Pichichi. But should he be tied at the top with another player (ahem, Ronaldo) then there will be all sorts of uproar.

There was similar controversy in both 2004-05 and 2010-11, stemming from the awarding of goals by Marca newspaper. Now, despite there being an official count of the league top scorer, the prestigious Pichichi trophy is set up and awarded by Marca newspaper, and Marca don’t use the official goals panel to decide who scored the goals. They decide themselves.

In 2004-05 Diego Forlan won the Pichichi outright, with 25 goals awarded. This, however, despite Samuel Eto’o also being officially labelled as scoring the same amount with Barca. This is because Marca only gave him 24, attributing a goal against his old club, Mallorca, to Deco (despite official arbitrators giving it to Eto’o).

This also had an effect on the European Golden Boot (now called Golden Shoe!). The ‘Bota de Oro’ (Golden Boot) is the award presented each season to the leading goalscorer in league games from the top level of every European league. It uses the Pichichi standings and as such Eto’o missed out on a share of that as well (although, he made up for it by winning both the Pichichi and Golden Boot the following year).

Then for the 2010-2011 Pichichi Marca awarded Ronaldo the prize and listed him as having 41 goals, despite the official tally being just 40. They had given him a goal officially awarded to Pepe. This didn’t matter in terms of competition with others as 40 would also have won it, but it did mean the new Pichichi record he had set was a goal greater than it should otherwise have been. Though it only took a season for the record to be knocked out of the water as Messi racked up a cool 50 goals the following season (last year).

This time the official count gives Messi Barca’s second goal against Athletic but Marca refuse to do so as they say the goal was an own goal by defender Amorebieta, who, in his eagerness to clear Messi’s goal-bound chip, tipped the ball in to the net.

So, the goal is officially Messi’s, but not for the Pichichi Trophy organiser, Madrid’s daily Newspaper.

Right now, although the detail is serious, it is irrelevant because Messi is tyrannical leader of the classification of La Liga’s sharp shooters. Cristiano is currently second with 13 ‘targets’ and Falcao has 11. But if for some reason the final battle would end in a tie, there would be a big problem.

Mourinho and Ronaldo to join Man United

Mourinho and Ronaldo to join Man United

In this video:

Spanish Newspaper Mundo Deportivo claim Manchester United manger, Sir Alex Ferguson, will step down at the end of this season (2012/13) and Jose Mourinho will replace him at Old Trafford and bring Cristiano Ronaldo with him.

They also say that the Real Madrid board have told Ronaldo that the doors are open for him to leave …so long as a club comes up with €100m for him.

Jose Mourinho is currently the bookies’ favourite to succeed Alex Ferguson.

Both Mourinho and Ronaldo are stalling on signing new contracts which is said to be angering the board.

Also, both men were asked by the media after Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City whether they will sign new contracts, to which both shirked the questions.

Biased Spanish Sports Papers

Biased Spanish Sports Papers

In this video:

A look at the way football is reported with complete bias by the Spanish sports papers.

Marca and As are heavily biased to wards Real Madrid while Mundo Deportivo is heavily biased towards Barcelona.

We take two articles from today’s papers to illustrate the point: One regarding Johan Cruyff, the other a quote from Xabi Alonso about Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mourinho to PSG, Ronaldo to Man U, Reina to leave Liverpool, Falcao to one of 4 Prem clubs

Mourinho to PSG, Ronaldo to Man U, Reina to leave Liverpool, Falcao to one of 4 Prem clubs

In today’s video:

The Ronaldo return to Manchester United Story

In response to what we reported last week that Ronaldo wants to leave Real Madrid and return to Manchester United, both Mundo and AS quote Ferguson today, with Madrid based AS making this story a front page feature. Both papers quote Ferguson as saying that he would like it to happen but that it would be practically impossible to sign Ronaldo right now at the peak of his career because he would cost too much. He says possibly one of the Russian clubs could afford him but that ‘CR7’ used to complain of English winters so doubts he’d go there.

PSG want Ronaldo and Mourinho

Al Thani, owner of PSG wants to lure not only Ronaldo, but also Mourinho to Paris. Mundo say Mourinho wants to live in London from next season and coach PSG (only 2 hours by train). AS also speculate as they report on a story from the Daily Mail that Mou’s wife and daughter were in London on Friday to enrol his 16 year old daughter on a Fine Art course at Camberwell College of Arts.

Mancini knows more than Morinhou

Mundo report that Roberto Mancini’s son, Andrea, has come out ahead of the Man City v Madrid game and said that Mancini knows more about football that Mourinho.
Andrea is well known to Oldham fans after his one appearance for them in 2011. He was on loan from City at the time having been signed by his dad from Inter, where he spent 3 years having been signed up by his dad there. In total he made 0 appearances for either City or Inter and a total of 11 appearances on loan during this time. Having been released by his dad at the end of last season he failed in a trial at League 1 Bournemouth and he’s now plying his trade at Valladolid B in the fourth tier of Spanish football. By plying his trade we mean he’s on their books, though he’s not yet turned out for them!

Man City to raid players and staff from Barcelona

Staying with Man City, and following on from our video last week citing Barca’s fear of City raiding their youth setup, Mundo today report that Man City are interested in players such as Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Busquets, Raul Sanllehi from the technical staff and the newest target, Doctor Ricard Pruna from the medical staff.

  • AS – Kaka to Italy.
  • Mundo -Reina to leave Liverpool.

La Liga stars tend to leave for Premiership, Falcao is next – Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester clubs battle it out

MARCA have an article entitled ‘The English Supermarket’ today. They talk of all of the players that move from Spain to England: Football is no stranger to the economic crisis plaguing Spain and thus many players are now moving abroad, particularly to the Premiership. They cite Rafa Benitez as the first to regularly fish from the La Liga lake, catching Torres, Xabi Alonso, Reina, Luis Garcia and Morientes, with players such as Cazorla, Aguero, Silva, Mata, Yaya Toure, Owen and Coloccini taking the bait since. English clubs have transferred over €300m to La Liga in the past decade (so surely this is actually of benefit regarding the crisis?!). Players such as Fabregas and Pique also moved, for free. More recent English acquisitions have been Suso, Bellerín, Pozo and Denis Suarez.

…Then a separate article, entitled ‘Heading to the Premiership’ talks about Chelsea, Man United, Man City and Spurs all fighting to get their hands on Radamel Falcao. It quotes Falcao as saying, “One day I’d like to go to a different team in a different league, but I have 3 years left on my contract and right no the reality is Atletico Madrid”. Marca speculate whether this move may come to fruition sooner than expected: Falcao has not been selected for any Europa League games this year, adding weight to the theory he may be off in January, but Falcao himself says this is nothing to do with the possibility of him leaving, but is a ‘precaution’.

Ronaldo to leave Madrid & Guardiola to join Man City

Ronaldo to leave Madrid & Guardiola to join Man City

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave Real Madrid

Madrid biased paper AS report that Ronaldo is ‘more like to leave at end of this season than he is to renew his contract’. The reasons being:

  • He doesn’t think the club support him enough in his efforts to win various awards such as the Balon D’or and Spanish Player of the Season.
  • He doesn’t think he gets enough protection or that the club push for him to get protection as Barcelona do with Messi.
  • He feels he doesn’t receive the respect from either Madrid or La Liga that he used to get at Manchester United and in the Premiership.

The article implies he’d like a move back to the Premiership. It refers to recent interviews where CR7 has called Ferguson a ‘fantastic person’ who is ‘like a father in football’ and that he ‘really misses him’ and has a ‘great relationship with him’. He also says that the first time he put the Madrid jersey on he was happy but now three years down the line he is longing for the respect he got from both Manchester United and the Premiership.

Barcelona worried that Pep Guardiola is going to join Manchester City

His agent claims there were firm offers from Manchester City, Chelsea, AC Milan and Bayern Munich as well as enquiries from the FAs of Qatar, Chile, Brazil and ENGLAND!

Now that Begiristain is Sporting Director at City, Barcelona are afraid of Pep teaming up with him and them raiding the Barca youth set up.

City are particularly interested in Pep as part of a project to replicate the La Masia youth system in Barcelona. City are going to spend £100m on the project which will accommodate 80 in-house trainees and have the potential to train up to 400. According to AS their aim is to ‘create the Messi of the future’

AC Milan want Carvalho, Kaka and Arbiol

Milan representative has been at the Bernabeu to discuss the possible transfer of Ricardo Carvalho for €9m on a 2.5 year contract. He also enquiried about Kaka and Raul Albiol. However, Carvalho said he’d rather put family first and that they are very happy in Madrid.
