Daniel Agger to Barcelona?

Pablo’s View: Agger or Luiz?

Daniel Agger to Barcelona? Its not very often that transfer rumours attached to Barcelona revolve around a central defender, but that seems to be the case at the moment.

New manager Tata Martino has had 2 tasks on the transfer front since taking over at Camp Nou: Firstly ensuring that the future of Cesc Fabregas is at Barcelona and secondly signing some defensive re-enforcements. He seems to have batted off interest from Old Trafford for their Spanish midfielder, so now all attention is on who comes in at the back.

Barcelona currently have Pique and Puyol as their first choice pairing, whilst Bartra, Montoya and Mascherano have provided cover in recent seasons. It is thought that to stay ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga and compete with Bayern Munich and Europe’s other top sides a more complete team is required.

David Luiz to BarcelonaThe money men at PSG turned down an approach for their main target, Thiago Silva. It would now seem to be a two horse race for the position, with the prime players linked coming from the Premier League:

David Luiz of Chelsea

Liverpool’s Daniel Agger.

Both are footballing centre backs, Luiz was even deployed in midfield during Rafa Benitez’s short reign as Chelsea Interim Manager. So there is little doubt that they would be able to fit into the Barca mold. Who would be the first choice for Barcelona?

Luiz Luiz

Luiz would seem to be the perfect long term replacement for Puyol. Their similar playing style and desire to win is supplemented by the fact that they also share a hairdresser.

Agger Do Do Do

Whilst Agger would probably provide better value due to Liverpool’s failure to qualify for the Champions League in recent seasons. Neither club will want to lose their star defender, but the pull of Barcelona could well mean that one of them will be moving to La Liga this month.

David Luiz to Barcelona

Part 1 of David Luiz to Barcelona Deal Complete

David Luiz to BarcelonaMundo Deportivo are today reporting that the first phase of the mission to get David Luiz to Barcelona has been completed.

The Barcelona director of football, Raul Sanllehi, met with Luiz’s agent, Giuliano Bertolucci, in London yesterday and confirmed the player’s desire to move to Catalonia.

They report that Barcelona must now move on to the next phase: negotiating with Chelsea.

46 million euros is the price quoted but despite saying that Chelsea are unwilling to sell they say that Luiz himself will help push the deal through.

The article also states that Barcelona have already ‘secured the option to sign Daniel Agger’ from Liverpool should the Luiz deal not materialise.

Seems Barca are all sorted then. Hmm, if only life was that easy.

New Barcelona defender

Barcelona’s New Defender

New Barcelona defenderBarcelona will be signing a central defender from the Premier League according to today’s Mundo Deportivo.

The top priority for Barcelona is the signing of a new central defender and after PSG’s Thiago Silva signed a new contract this weekend they now have 5 key options:

David Luiz, Daniel Agger, Vincent Kompany, Jan Vertonghen and Laurent Koscielny.

The paper report that Luiz would be top choice but Mourinho has recently stated that under no circumstances would Chelsea sell their Brazilian funny man.

Next in line is Liverpool’s Daniel Agger. A cheaper option that comes with experience and tactical nous, Mundo think this could be the most viable option.

If Barca can pull neither of these two off then it is thought visits to Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal will be next in line to try and prize one of their prized assets away.
